Not everything that looks like rot is rot. Cracked, bubbled, or peeling paint on exterior wood can look alarming, and it often gets mistaken for decay underneath, when the wood itself may be completely sound. Telling fake rot vs real rot apart takes one simple test, not a guess.
Why Peeling Paint Can Look Like Rot
Paint films fail for reasons that have nothing to do with what’s happening inside the wood. UV exposure breaks down the paint’s binders over time, making it brittle and prone to cracking and flaking, especially on south and west-facing surfaces that see the most direct sun. Repeated expansion and contraction as wood swells and shrinks with temperature and humidity changes stresses the paint film further, and older or lower-quality paint jobs simply have less flexibility left to absorb that movement. The result can look strikingly similar to early rot from a few feet away, a discolored, rough, deteriorating surface, without any actual decay underneath.
To be clear, paint failure sometimes does indicate a real moisture problem building behind it, so it’s not a sign to dismiss automatically. It’s a sign that needs a proper test, not an assumption in either direction.
The One Test That Actually Tells You
The Poke Test settles this reliably. Press a flathead screwdriver firmly into the wood beneath the failed paint. Solid, healthy wood resists, offering real pushback against the tool. Wood that’s actually decaying gives way easily, often sinking a quarter inch or more with minimal pressure. This single test is more reliable than any visual judgment, since paint condition and wood condition are genuinely separate things that happen to sometimes look similar.
If the Wood Passes: Good News, Real Fix Is Small
If the Poke Test shows solid, resistant wood underneath rough or peeling paint, what you’re looking at is a maintenance item, not a repair. Scraping back to sound material, re-priming, and repainting resolves it. This is also worth treating as an early opportunity rather than just a cosmetic fix: a compromised paint film is an open door for moisture, and closing it now is meaningfully cheaper than waiting for it to become a real decay problem later.

If the screwdriver sinks in, the paint failure was masking actual decay, not causing a false alarm.
